Who Do We Honor on Memorial Day?

It’s important to pause and reflect on the purpose of Memorial Day. Contrary to certain misconceptions, this is not just a day for partying, eating, and camaraderie. Those all are fine, but we should always take the “memorial” component seriously, given how many men and women have fought and perished defending our country.

Below are the top five deadliest conflicts in the almost 250 year history of the United States.

  1. The American Civil War (1861 to 1865) → 620,000 fatalities
  2. World War 2 (1939 to 1945) → 405,399 fatalities
  3. World War 1 (1917 to 1918) → 116,516 fatalities
  4. Vietnam War (1965 to 1973) → 58,209 fatalities
  5. Korean War (1950 to 1953) → 36,516 fatalities

So, as you can see, many soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. This somber reality should evoke our respect and willingness to pay homage to these fallen heroes. Hence, why we emphasize our annual Memorial Day Hike.

Other Ways to Honor Veterans on Memorial Day

Even if you can’t join us for the event, there are plenty of other ways to honor veterans, both living and deceased.

  • Visit a veteran family member or one who is sick in the hospital
  • Prepare a nice meal for a veteran in your community
  • Visit war memorials or pray at a veteran cemetery
  • Display an American flag
  • Perform some other charitable task for any veteran
